The World Heritage Site at Hadrian’s Wall is one of the greatest monuments to the power of the Roman Empire. By the time Hadrian became Emperor in 117AD the Roman Empire had ceased to expand and Hadrian visited Britain in 122AD and ordered the construction of the Wall to consolidate his boundaries. Hadrian’s Wall was thus built between the Solway Firth in the west and the River Tyne in the east to “to separate the Romans from the Barbarians”.
The Wall was constructed over a period of six years and it served as an effective military structure for over 250 years. Today the area between South Shields and Ravenglass is studded with forts, Milecastles, temples and turrets which are over 2000 years old.
Hadrian’s Wall is the most important structure built by the Romans in Britain and is the best known frontier in the entire Roman Empire.
Our full day visit to Hadrian’s Wall includes a brief stop at either Poltross Burn or Cawfields Milecastles followed by a visit to the Multi-award winning site at Vindolanda Fort with extensive remains of the fort and civilian settlement, together with rare Roman writing tablets, leathers, textiles, pottery and wooden objects.
Alternatively, you can visit Housesteads Roman Fort and Museum, which is on the direct line of the Wall and is the most complete Roman Fort in Britain. This Fort is in a spectacular position with commanding views over the surrounding countryside. It offers a detailed insight into daily life including granaries, barracks, a hospital and an ingenious latrine! There are also good stretches of Hadrian’s Wall in the immediate vicinity and numerous photograph opportunities.
